The first race in the Nike Ballycotton summer series of road races was held in Ballyandreen tonight, once again attracting some 200 competitors.  As always William Harty from KCK set a strong pace from the gun, going right clear before the mile mark.  He was, however, caught by Leevale’s Martin McCarthy, making a return to the racing scene after a good break.  The two raced hard over the closing stages, with McCarthy’s experience holding out to give him victory in a time of 24:43, five seconds clear of Harty who is still a junior.  Their times are some of the fastest recorded in recent years over the tough hilly course.  Eric Meade of East Cork was third in 26:12, followed by Peter Duggan of St. Joseph’s (26:30), and Matt Magner of Leevale (26:50).  Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy was the women’s winner in 29:20.
