That benefit is that you will be fit, healthy and strong enough to turn up and run on the day.

Luke’s coach, Rob Heffernan was also in action in Saransk. He competed in the 20K, which he was using as training for the 50K event, and finished an impressive 12th in 1:21:51.

The first event on the track was long Hurdles. Jack Murphy gave a display of Hurdling in the BU15 250mH to win in a time of 32.26 sec. Lydia O’Connor won her first medal of the day when she took silver in the GU18 300mH.

The results of the middle distance coaching structure were evident in the 1500m races, with a number of very strong performances across the age groups. Timmy Hennessy comfortably won the BU14 race, Matthew Murnane finished a strong second in the BU15 event. In the U15 Boys Luke Horgan ran a tactically sound race and pulled away from the field in the last lap to take gold. The U16 Girls ran with the 17’s 18’s & 19’s, Louise Shanahan showed her class by beating all competitors.

The younger middle distance athletes were equally impressive, with Brandon Idah winning the U10 300m. Jamie O Sullivan finished a very close second in the BU12 700m. Emma Bickerdike was also 2nd in the GU13 700m.

In the sprint hurdles young Leevale athletes were to the fore. The GU12 was won by Emma Quigley, closely followed by Saorirse O’Flynn. In the BU12 Thomas White was a clear winner. In the GU14 the ever improving Gillian French took bronze, while Marie O’Halloran was in a different class in the GU16 event.

In front of the stand Leevale athletes were to the fore in most of the sprint events. GU9 Caitlin Hennessy was 2nd closely followed by Ciara O’Mahony in 3rd. In BU11 Conor Corbett finished 3rd. BU13 Robert Cregan was a clear winner. GU13 Aoife Lordan finished 3rd. BU16 was dominated by Luke Ring, while club-mate Jack Murphy took bronze.

Darren Lee made a welcome return to the track to finish 3rd in the BU17 sprint. Emma O’Brien was clear winner in the GU17, while Leevale girls Shona Lowe and Edaein Lowe finished 1st & 2nd in GU19. Ache Ogbene rounded off the sprint success by taking silver in the BU19 sprint.

The track events were rounded off with wins for Emma O’Brien and Lydia O’Connor in the GU17 & GU18 300m respectively. John O’Brien was second in BU18 400m while Alan Murnane stumbled just before the line in the BU19 400m, but still manage a second place finish.

Athletes please note the following:

• Be at the track in good time as the programme can often run ahead (or behind!) schedule.
• Bring rain gear and suncream.
• These are long days at the track – bring enough food and liquids for the day.
• All competing athletes must wear club colours for all competitions: club singlet with black shorts, white socks, and running spikes are all mandatory. Only black T-Shirts should be worn inside the club singlet. Singlets are available at the track from Ina Killeen.
• The County T&F Championships are a great opportunity for good competition in a fun environment. Don’t forget to enjoy the day!

Every participant received a Powerade ION4 Sports Bottle and many of the performance athletes made use of the Hydration Testing which was provided by a Powerade Sports Scientist.

Highlight of the day was the draw for the “Personal Best in the London 2012 Olympic Stadium with Powerade”. Powerade offered Denis a trip to London with a guest to run a 100m on the track at the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, with the fastest runners setting their own ‘Personal Bests’ in the stadium that will host the track and field events at this summer’s Olympics. Dennis will also get expert advice and training techniques from Jessica Ennis’s coach, Tony Minichiello.

The huge undertaking of spreading their annual track and field meeting over two days proved to be a resounding success for the Leevale club with a large turnout of juvenile athletes yesterday adding to what was an exciting day of senior and junior action on Saturday.

Some fine early season sprinting plus a number of exciting finishes were the highlights of Saturday’s programme at the CIT.

The big upset of the day came in the women’s 1500m where European Junior silver-medallist Ciara Mageean had to settle for second behind Orla Drumm of UCC. This was a disappointing field with just Drumm and Mageean facing the starter as Leevale man Chris Harrington acted as their pacemaker.

Drumm, the Irish indoor title holder at 1500m, was clearly in better shape as she comfortably sat on 20-year-old Mageean’s shoulder through a fast opening lap of 63 seconds before kicking with 150 metres to go. She won in a time of 4:18.4 with a clearly disappointed Mageean having to settle for 4:21.61, well outside her fastest of 4:07.45.

While her husband Robert Heffernan was claiming fourth position in the men’s 20km walk in Portugal, Marian Andrews got her summer campaign off to a good start with a double in the 200m and 400m.

“That blew away the cobwebs, we’ve just returned from 10 days warm weather training and I’m now hoping to get a race in Spain next month so I’ll see how that goes,” said the Togher athlete.

Dean Cronin from Blarney-Inniscarra set a very fast pace in the 800m when going through the first lap in 52 seconds, but in the windy conditions understandably slowed the second time around but was still happy with his time of 1:52.52.

The conditions, along with a slow opening lap, ruled out any fast time in the men’s mile which Mark Hanrahan of the promoting club won in 4:11.45, well clear of John Travers who recorded 4:19.35. “It was very slow early on, but I felt comfortable enough. I was a but unsure of how Travers would do so I’m happy to win,” said Hanrahan.

David Hynes (Menapians) had a fine sprint double and finishing second in both races was Marcus Lawler from Carlow, son of former Irish champion Patricia Almond. He set a new Irish Youth’s record of 21.56 for the 200 metres while his 10.75 in the 100 metres was just two hundreds of a second outside the Irish best.

The most exciting race of the day came in the men’s 400m hurdles where Thomas Barr, Tim Crowe and Paul Byrne were neck-and-neck down the home straight before Barr of Ferrybank won by a hundred of a second from Crowe.

In the field events, host club Leevale were victorious in both long jumps through David Quilligan and Jessica Sheehan while the evergreen Pat Moore – who won the first of his six national javelin titles back in 1972 – took that event with a throw of 40.52.

After a long-running bout of injuries, Chris Harrington is back to something close to his best and had a great run to finish 2nd in 20:43 to James McCarthy of the host club. John Shine was just behind Chris in 3rd. New signing, Marcos Yaniz was the next Leevale man in 8th. Colm Moore in 12th made it 4 Leevale athletes in the top 12. Margaret Murphy was top Leevale lady in 5th.

On Sunday 29 April the next Open Sports in the calendar will take place. This is the Riverstick-Kinale event which will take place at the Riverstick GAA grounds, starting at 1:00 pm. Programme.

The following Tuesday, 1 May, the Cork Graded Leagues get underway at CIT track at 7:30 pm. The events at the first meet will be the 100m, 400m, mile, long jump and shot. Different events will be held at each of the meets. Programme.

Later in May, on Sunday 27th, the next of the open sports takes place. This the the Courcies Sports, which will be held at the Ballinspittle GAA grounds at 1:00 pm. Programme.

We encourage all our athletes to support local open sports events and the T&F Leagues.

The weather on both days was quite cool but bright, and apart from one heavy shower on Saturday, was dry. The blustery conditions were not ideal for middle-distance athletes looking for times, but ideal for sprinters as the following wind down the home straight was usually within the +2.0 m/s limit for setting times.

The senior programme on Saturday saw some great performances, most notably by Sean Tobin of Clonmel in the junior 1500m race. Sean is chasing a 3:48 standard for the World Juniors and was aiming for 3:53 on Saturday. In the worst of the blustery weather, and running much of the race on his own, he ended up well inside this mark at 3:51. This was phenomenal running in the conditions, and so early in the season. In this form he’ll surely achieve qualification later this season.

 There was also a great display of front running in the 800m from Laura Crowe to take victory in 2:07, and a double victory for Marian Andrews in the 200\400. The women’s 1500m was billed as the race of the day and it was indeed a great showdown between Ciara Mageean and Orla Drumm, with the Limerick woman proving strongest over the last lap to take the win in 4:18. Unfortunately these two international-class runners were the only athletes in the field, with most other middle-distance women opting instead for the 800m or 3K. The women’s middle-distance events may be reviewed for next year’s programme.

The hurdles events were epic affairs; the men’s 400mH saw a showdown between Thomas Barr and Tim Crowe. After a battle down the home straight, only one hundredth of the second separated them, with Barr just pipping his training partner on the line. The women’s 100mH saw an exhibition of hurdling technique from Sarah Lavin of Emerald. The fields in all hurdle events were extremely strong.

The sprint event were very well supported by the athletes, the men’s 100m and 200m each requiring 4 heats. David Hynes had a great sprint double in the 100\200, with Marcus Lawler finishing 2nd to him in each event. In the field events, local favourites David Quilligan and Jessica Sheehan had good wins in very competitive long jump competitions and junior athlete James McCabe of Dunboyne won the hammer competition with a massive throw of 62.55m.

“Evening Echo” report

Sunday saw a huge crowd arrive for the juvenile meet. The entry in some of the events was almost overwhelming at times, with over 50 athletes competing in some the long jumps and sprints. Unfortunately, due to the sheer numbers, the programme was well behind schedule after sprint events and it never really caught up later in the day. In spite of that, it was a great day’s action, blessed with better weather than on the Saturday.

Many thanks to the clubs for travelling and bringing athletes in such numbers. We appreciate the patience of the many clubs that stayed with us right till the end of the day, particularly those who had travelled long distances to be at the meet. The programme will be reviewed again ahead of next year’s event.

Dave Comber was the next Leevale athlete home, well inside the 3-hour mark at 2:53, despite suffering with a headcold. Seasoned campaigner, Ian O’Sullivan, who is a recent Leevale signing, was just outside the 3 hours. His finish of 3:03 was not helped by falling over the electronic timing system with a mile to go! The resultant last 11-minute mile was enough to scupper any chances of breaking the 3 hours.

On Thursday 3rd May 2012, Powerade will be giving sports enthusiasts exclusive access to run 100m on the track at the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, with the fastest runners setting their own ‘Personal Bests’ in the stadium that will host the track and field events at this summer’s Games.

To be in with a chance of winning this once-in-a-lifetime experience, entrants need to simply register and participate in one of four ‘Powerade Ireland On Your Marks’ regional 100m race events. Simply register online at www.powerade.ie/onyourmarks for one of the four regional events and participate on the day to be entered.

The free Regional events, hosted in conjunction with Athletics Ireland, will take place Cork IT on the 22nd April.

The participants don’t need to be the fastest person in the World to win, they just need to be there and show their determination. At the end of each regional event every participant’s race number will be placed in a draw to win one of four places on the Powerade London 2012 Olympic Stadium Experience
