Cathal and Orla make the cut

Congratulations to Cathal Owens and Orla Barry, both of whom were selected on Irish international teams recently. Cathal was named on the 4×400m relay team that will compete in the World Junior T&F Championships in Poland on 8-13 July, and is the first Leevale athlete to compete at this level. AAI Junior & U23 T&F Championships, Tullamore

The Woodie’s DIY Junior and Under 23 track and field championships were held in Tullamore on Sunday in bright sunny conditions with strong cross winds. Cathal Owens ran in the Junior 400m and finished a strong fourth, well inside the 50 second mark. This run was sufficient to secure Cathal a place on the 4×400 team travelling to the world juniors next weekend. Chris Murnane continued his run of success in the 400m hurdles by taking second place. David Quilligan injured his back during the long jump but still managed to win with a 6.44m jump.

Sarah Bradfield made a welcome return to competition and finished second in the junior women’s discus.

In the U23 Men, Pawel Hazler competed in the Discus, Shot and Hammer, taking gold and two silvers respectively. Derek Duff was unfortunate to be beaten in the 100m with first and second place being awarded the same times. Derek subsequently made up for the 100m disappointment by winning the 200m title. Greg O’ Leary’s form continues to return and he finished fourth in the 200m.

Claire McSweeney competed in the U23 Women’s 400m and finished third.

KitKat Schools’ Tailteann Games

Leevale had three athletes competing in the KitKat Tailteann Schools in Santry last Saturday. Conditions were terrible with the athletes having to endure wind and driving rain. Kate Humphries competed in the 300m hurdles and 300m events, finishing third in both. Edmond O’ Halloran finished second in the 100m hurdles while Patrick Maher comfortably won the 400m hurdles.

Field on Track at County Novice

Stephen Field’s performance in the 100m was the highlight from a Leevale point of view at the County Novice & Masters T&F Championships, held last night in CIT. The Leevale man, a silver medallist in the 400m at Special Olympics in Shanghai last year, ran a superb PB of 12.5 to win a very competitive Novice 100m.

Also in action was Leevale’s other Shanghai star, Joe Nagle. Joe, who won events on each of his last two visits to CIT, continued his good form in winning both the discus and 56lb in the O35 section, and finishing 4th in the javelin. Should the AAI ever relax their restrictions on the number of events per athlete at the National League, Joe might one day cover all the field events for Leevale!

Frank Stam also competed in the Discus and Javelin in the Men’s O50 section, winning both, while back on the track Denis Metcalfe was in action in the Novice 800m, finishing 3rd. Overall, the fixture was well supported, and it was good to see a decent level of competition across most of the events on the night.

Ciarán and Mark on form in Gothenburg

Leevale middle distance stars, Ciarán Ó Lionáird and Mark Hanrahan, were in flying form at the Folksam Grand Prix in Gothenburg tonight, finishing 5th and 6th respectively in the 3000m final. Ciarán continued his good recent form and was only just pipped for 3rd place, finishing in a time of 8:07. Ciarán’s run was all the more impressive coming as it did only days after his second place finish in the 5000m at the European Cup in Tallinn.

Mark was just three seconds behind Ciarán on the night, getting a deserved PB of 8:10 in the process. It has been a fantastic season so far for Mark, who has made a great recovery from an injury that had his athletics career in doubt until only a year ago.

Irish Women 4th, Men 3rd in European Cup

Leevale athletes contributed a total of 22 points to the Irish men’s and women’s teams that were in action in Tallinn, Estonia, and Leiria, Portugal over the weekend.

The women’s team competed in the 1st League, Group A, and included two Leevale representatives. Derval O’ Rourke finished 3rd in the 100m hurdles in 13.12, and Ailis McSweeney came in 7th in the 100m. Both also competed in the 4×100m relay, on an Irish team that finished 5th. Highlights for the Irish team were Eileen O’ Keefe’s win in the hammer and a resounding victory for the 4×400m team. The women’s team finished 4th overall. Leiria results

The men’s team were in action in the 2nd League, Group A, and finished in a good 3rd place overall. Leevale’s Ciarán Ó Lionáird contributed handsomely to this achievement with a strong 2nd placing in the 5000m in 14:24. Dennis Finnegan, who competed recently for Leevale in the National T&F League, finished 6th in the triple jump. Munster Juvenile U15-U19 Championships

Leevale U15-U19 athletes competed in the Munster Juvenile Championships over the weekend at the CIT track. Conditions on Saturday were wet and miserable, however this did not dampen the spirits of the athletes who recorded some very good times. Unfortunately for Edmond O’ Halloran in the 100m Hurdles, Chris Murnane and David Quilligan in the 200m, an illegal wind meant their championship best times will not be recorded. Kate Humphries once again ran a very strong 200m to take first place.

The sun shone on Sunday and the performances continued. Kate Humphries comfortably won the GU17 300m Hurdles, while Edmond O Halloran and Patrick Maher have now taken their sprint hurdle dual to the 300m hurdle event. On this occasion Patrick came away with the win. Cathal Owens dropped the 400m this weekend in favour of the 100m & 200m. In both events he finished a close second to his clubmate David Quilligan. David also won the long jump taking his gold medal tally to three.

Eric Stam, Daire Walsh and Sean Fogarty, the U15 multievent specialists, competed in a range of track and field event over the two days. Eric won four events and finished second in two, while Daire Walsh won the shot putt and secured two second place finishes.

Well done to all the Leevale athletes who have qualified for the national championships. We are now looking forward to a productive visit to Antrim in two weeks time.

Orla Barry Sets European Senior Record

Leevale paralympic athlete, Orla Barry, recently set a new European Senior Record of 27.98m in the discus at the German Open National Championships, held in Berlin on 7-8 June. This is a phenomenal achievement for Orla who has held the European record of 25.24 since 2006 before improving to 26.26 earlier this year.

Hopefully it will be on to even greater things for the Ladysbridge athlete this year as the Irish team for Beijing this autumn is due to be announced within the next couple of weeks.

National League Round 2, Tullamore

Leevale senior athletes competed in the second round of the National Leagues in Tullamore on Sunday. Once again Leevale travelled with strong teams. In the men’s division North Down were strong across a number of events and on the day deserved first place on 110 points. Leevale men’s team finished second on 103 points. Mark Hanrahan once again had an excellent run in the 1500m, stretching out the field to win in style, while the Leevale 4×100 team looked extremely efficient and comfortably won the race against strong opposition. Cathal Owens ran a PB of 50 seconds flat to win the 400m.

The women’s team was strengthened for this round of the competition with the addition of Christina Broderick and Sarah Ryan and both athletes picked up valuable points for the club. Sarah won the pole vault and was third in the javelin while Christina won the 400m hurdles and was third in high jump. Overall the women’s team performed well, securing third place with a total of 100 points

Both the men’s and women’s teams are now comfortably qualified for the National League Final which will be held in Tullamore on July 27th. With the support of all our senior athletes Leevale has a great opportunity to do well in the final this year.

Deirdre Murphy 2nd in New England

Congratulations to Deirdre Murphy who finished second in the discus, throwing 39.47m, at the USATF New England Outdoor Championships at the weekend. Deirdre, who is currently based in Boston, is coming home to compete for Leevale in the National Track and Field Championships on 19\20 July in Santry, where she will compete in the Shot and Discus.

Derval Under 13 Seconds

Derval O’ Rourke’s preparation for Beijing continued last night when she competed at the European Athletics Premium Meeting in Prague. Derval finished second with her fastest time in two years, 12.90 seconds. Poland´s Aurelia Trywianska won the event, setting a new Meeting record of 12.81 and Germany’s European silver medallist Kirsten Bolm finished third in 13.07 seconds.

Derval will take centre stage at the up coming Cork City Sports which will be held at UCC Sports Complex on July 12th. She will be attempting to win the 100m Hurdles for the first time at the Cork City Sports, having come agonisingly close in previous years. Marina Topic (Slovenia), Andrea Bliss (Jamaica), Michel Catteneo (Italy), and a few quick Americans will be providing stern opposition for our local star.

European Cup Team Announced

Athletics Ireland have announced the team to compete in the upcoming European Cup. Congratulations to the Leevale athletes who have been selected, Ailis McSweeney who will compete in the 100m, while Derval O’Rourke is the automatic selection for the 100m hurdles. Ailis and Derval will also feature in the 4×100 relay team. Ciaran Ó Lionáird is rewarded for some impressive recent form with a spot in the 5,000m. The women’s team will compete in Leiria, Portugal in the 1st League Group A on 21-22nd June. The Men’s team will compete in the 2nd League Group A in Tallin, Estonia.

AAI National U10-U12 Team Championships, Tullamore

The qualified U10 - U12, 2x, and relay teams travelled to Tullamore last
Saturday to compete in their All Ireland Championships. U12 girls,
Marie O’ Halloran and Ciara Nalty, were paired with each other for both the
long jump and 80m sprint, and they competed very well to finish second in
the long jump and third in the 80m sprint. In the Boys U11 Sean O’ Callaghan
and Brian Flahive finished third in their 60m sprint. Brian Flahive then
competed in the long jump with his partner Jack Murphy. Having finished
third in Munster on the previous Sunday, the boys upped their performance at
the right time to take gold.

Eli Kadi ran the fastest over all time in the boys U12 80m and secured third
place overall with his partner Daire O’ Sullivan. The medal haul was then
rounded off in the girls U12 600m, where Louise Shanahan and Eirne Ní
Dheasmhunaigh ran two strong races to improve on their Munster performance
and win gold at national level.

Congratulations to all the young Leevale athletes who competed. They should
be proud of both their performances and achievements.

County Senior T&F Championships, Day 2

Good competition despite a pitifully small field - the men’s 5000m was a reflection of the Cork County Championships as a whole, the second leg of which was held in murky conditions at CIT on Friday evening, 13 June. In the longest distance event of the championships, Des Casey of Milstreet held off East Cork’s Seán McGrath to win in a very respectable 15:10, despite there being only 4 competitors in the entire event!

The largest field of athletes on the evening went in the men’s 800m which was won by Ronan Foulkes of Togher, with Leevale’s Denis Metcalfe 7th. Leevale’s ever-reliable field eventer, Joe Nagle, won a closely-fought shot competition with a season’s best of 11.05.

One can only hope that something can be done next year to rejuvenate what was once a competitive and well-supported fixture, perhaps by switching it to a time where there is less congestion on the athletics calendar and\or reverting to a Sunday competition.

Munster Juvenile U9-U14 Championships

The Munster U9-U14 Juvenile Championships were held in the new track in Templemore over the weekend. This is an excellent facility and credit is due to the local clubs. Leevale athletes performed well taking their share of medals in the 2x competitions, the individual championships and the relays. All the medal winning U9 to U12 teams will travel to Tullamore next Saturday for their All-Ireland team and relay championships, while the U13 & U14 qualifiers have a break before they travel to Antrim on July 5th & 6th for their AAI championships.

County Senior T&F Championships, Day 1

The men’s 1500m was the highlight of a low key and poorly-attended first round of the County Senior T&F Championships held at CIT on Friday 6 June.

Leevale athletes fared well throughout with Derek Duff winning the 100m from John Corr and Claire McSweeney continuing her return to form with an easy win in the 400m. Beijing silver medallist, Joe Nagle, had an equally straightforward win in the discus.

Leevale’s Mark Carroll was the star attraction in the large field entered for the men’s 1500m. His clubmate Mark Hanrahan ran as pacemaker for the first 800m, setting the pace for Mark Christie and Carroll (below). Over the final 700m the Leevale man slowly pulled away from the Mullingar man, running on to win in 3:46. Ryan Creech, moving up to senior for the day, came through well for 6th after a conservative start, ahead of Denis Metcalfe in 10th.

Cork City Marathon ‘08

The 2nd Annual Cork City Marathon was held today, Monday 2nd June. Once again, competitors and organisers alike were blessed with fine weather. Though warm and muggy, athletes were spared the scorching temperatures of last year.

The men’s race was taken by Roy Fahy of East Cork, last year’s third-placer, in a time of 2:33:55. The women’s title was taken by Lucy Brennan from Sligo in 2:54:47, beating last year’s winner, Tracy Guilfoyle, into second. Nollaigh Hunter of Leevale ran a great race to finish 7th in her second marathon, her time of 3:08:31 a full 7 minutes faster than last year. In the men’s race, John Hallahan of Leevale was competing in his first ever marathon, and ran a brave race to exceed even his own expectations, finishing with a time of 3:49:52.

Last year’s overall winner, Alan O’ Shea, led his team to victory in the popular team relay event in a time of 2:23:38. There were high hopes that the Leevale A team could mount a challenge for this title, but disaster struck as Cathal Lombard picked up an injury in the opening leg and was unable to hand over to James Grufferty at the changeover point. Unaware of what was going on, Gruff waited around and eventually decided he was going to run his leg anyway and ended up running most of the marathon himself! The Leevale B team ran well to finish 14th in 2:56:34. The team members were newcomers Stephen Walter and Paddy Fogarty, Keith O’ Sullivan, Cillian Ó Tuama, and Denis Metcalfe, who did his best impression of “The Fastest Man in Cork” coming in to the finish, so much so that we might next see him in action on the South Mall on Patrick’s Day next year!

Overall, the event was well organised and supported. Although the crowd at the finish on Patrick Street seemed smaller than last year, there was good support for the athletes around the course, and, with upwards of 7000 athletes taking part, the signs are good that the event will grow and remain a major fixture on the athletics calendar for years to come.

2008 results

KitKat All-Ireland Schools T&F

The KitKat schools were held in ideal conditions in Tullamore on Saturday 31st May. A number of Leevale athletes competed, representing their respective schools.

Eric Stam competed in the junior boys javelin and high jump competitions. Unfortunately both events were held at the same time and Eric had to move from one to the other repeatedly during the competitions, not an ideal situation. However in spite of this Eric threw a PB of 41.82m in the javelin to secure gold. Unfortunately the disruption affected his concentration for the high jump, but he still finished second with a jump of 1.68m.

Kate Humphries was unlucky to finish fourth in the intermediate girls 300m hurdles. A lane eight draw for Kate gave the other girls a target to chase. Patrick Maher was next on the track for the intermediate boys 400m hurdles. He attacked the race from the gun and entered the home straight in the lead, which he successfully defended to win the race. Chris Murnane competed in the senior boys 400m hurdles finishing second in a PB of 56.52 seconds.

In the intermediate boys 3000m Ryan Creech ran a brave race, he took the race on, leading from the start, and stringing out the field. However as in the schools cross county he was unable to shake Byrne, who took the lead from Ryan at the bell. Ryan finished second in a very credible time of 8:55.44.

Also in the intermediate boys Patrick Maher and Edmond O’ Halloran competed in the 100m hurdles. A slip at the start affected Edmond’s chances, however he recovered well to finish in third place.

David Quilligan comfortably won the senior boys long jump with 6.78m. Louise McArdle is still developing as a 400m athlete and she secured her first schools medal over the distance with third place in the senior girls.

Munster Senior T&F and Juvenile Combined Events

Very small numbers attended the Munster Senior Open T&F Championships and the Juvenile Combined Events held in Castleisland on Sunday 25th May. On a good athletics day at a great venue only 2 Leevale Combined Event athletes showed up from the 15 entered. Although having this event after 3 consecutive Schools/County competition weekends and 6 days before the All-Ireland Schools final is an excusable reason not to partake for those who progressed to this final, it is no reason for the others and it is concerning that so many were absent.

A strong wind at the Kerry track made it tough for the competitors. Katey Byrd won the women’s 100m hurdles and Claire McSweeney finished 3rd in the 400m. Derek Duff won the men’s 100m while Cathal Owens and Paul Stack finished first and second respectively in the 200m.

For both Leevale representatives Gary Collins and Darren Lee this was their first combined events competition but they were in great shape. Gary showed great character to overcome disappointment in his high jump by winning the shot putt. For the concluding 800m he had roughly 7 seconds to spare on the third placed runner and just when it looked as if he was going to lose that margin he put in a great final 200m to secure his second overall place. Darren also got involved in an exciting 800m and had an even closer battle for second place. While he was attacked himself by the fourth placed runner who ran a superb 800m at the front, Darren was closing in on second. In the end 8 points or 0.8 sec separated Darren from 2nd place. Gary and Darren improved almost all their PBs. For both to come away with a medal is a truly commendable achievement, and most likely they will be back for more.
