After nearly two years of injury problems Leevale’s Darren Dinneen, a student at Harvard University, is back on track, ready to resume a career that promised so much as a junior. After a couple of low key 800m races he really impressed when winning the 800m at the St. John’s University Twilight meet in New York. His winning time that night of 1:48.69, impressed both himself and his coach Frank Haggerty. Coming so soon after his return to track racing they both feel that there is plenty more improvement in him. Leevale’s Mark Carroll was also in winning form at the weekend. He took part in the Coogan Midnight Mile, a race that received live TV coverage. Taking the lead after 400m he kept the pace going to record a time of 3:56.9, with American Brian Baker second in 3:58.6. Valerie Lynch from Carrignavar was in great form at the Sun Belt Conference, winning the 3,000m in 10:10.1, the 5,000m in 18:02.48, and placing fifth in the 1,500m in 4:50.67. East Cork’s Terri Hennessy was sixth in the 5,000, and eight in the 3,000m, while Claire Gibbons of Leevale won the 10,000m in 38:57.61, and Barry Egan was sixth in the 5,000m with 14:43.5.
