UCC Athletic Club held their annual 5k race on the Mardyke/Western road circuit under BHAA rules today. After the first of three circuits Roy Fahy of Leevale went into the lead. Fresh from a good run at the national road relays last week he gradually increased the pace until he had just three others for company, Eamon McEvoy, Tommy Moloney from Nenagh, and James Murphy from Fermoy. McEvoy was first to fall off the pace. While never getting away from the others Fahy did enough to stay in front, winning in a time of 15:47, with Murphy second in 15:52, Moloney third in 15:58 and McEvoy fourth in 16:04. They were followed by John Collins, Paul O’Mahony, Kieran McKeown and Michael Murphy. The womens race saw Mary Sheehan of Fermoy record an impressive win over Niamh O’Sullivan of Kerry. Her winning time was 17:08, nine seconds ahead of O’Sullivan. Mary Sweeney was third, ahead of Veronica Colleran from Ennis, Joan Hough and Colette O’Riordan.
