International Holiday Competition at North Mon

Every two years a group of teenager runners from Washington make a visit to Ireland, with  Tipperary man Phil English the chief organiser.  Races take place in Tipperary and the North Mon.  New Year’s Day saw the American visitors line up for competition against the North Mon, and other runners drawn from local clubs. Run around the grounds of the Mon, the two races provided some nice holiday competition.  Olga Cronin of East Cork took control of the girls race soon after the start and continued on for a fine win over Nicole Ciullter of Washington, with Louise Murphy of Leevale third and Laura Noble of Washington fourth.  This was Olga’s third win in the series. The boys race was totally dominated by Washington runners, a big change from previous years.  Kevin Engleheardt looked well in control as he raced to victory over his Washington team mate Kris Marlin.  Aaron Kearney of North Mon did his best to keep the home flag flying, holding off visitor Mike Barbero, and Thomas Kennefick of Leevale.  Fergus Meade of Carrigtwohill in eight position was next best of the locals.
