The South Munster schools cross country championships were held in perfect conditions in Carrignavar today. Brian Keane (Leevale) showed his well-being in the senior race. Setting off at the head of affairs he had only Mark McCormack of North Mon for company by the end of the first of five laps. By halfway he was on his own as he continued his preparations for the National junior championships to be held in Donegal on Sunday week. In the end he scored an effortless victory. Behind there was a battle for second with Timmy Murphy of St. Aidans coming through strongly to overtake McCormack. Ronan Crowley (Leevale) from Hamilton High School in Bandon had a disappointing run to finish fourth, ahead of Mark Carroll, Enda Grandfield and Aaron Kearney of North Mon, and Barry Hayes of St. Aidans. The intermediate race saw Thomas Kennefick (Leevale) of Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig and Fergus Meade of Midleton CBS break away from the rest of the field at the end of the first of four laps. Kennefick continued to lead until 800m from the finish when Meade went into the lead. However, Kennefick rallied to regain the lead close home to take the title. Patrick Brown of CBC was third, ahead of Patrick Murphy of Colaiste Choilm and Alan Foolkes (Leevale) of North Mon.
