The annual Streets of Cobh 5k road race was held in ideal weather conditions tonight, with Leevale runners dominating. James McGrufferty and Damien Collins set the early pace, but by halfway McGrufferty had fallen off the pace with Jason Foolkes the new leader followed by his Leevale clubmates Kevin Barry and Collins. Foolkes tried hard to break away, but did not succeed until into the last mile, going on to record his second east Cork win in a couple of weeks, having earlier won in Shanagarry. Foolkes posted a winning time of 16:19, with Collins second in 16:29and Barry third in 16:43. They were followed home by Denis McCarthy of East Cork, Mcgrufferty, Alan Foolkes of Leevale and the Midleton pair of Tom Cody and Dan Horgan. Mary Sweeney of St. Finbarrs won the womens race in a time of 19:12, with Louise Murphy of Leevale second in 20:12, and Catriona McGreggor of Midleton third in 20:28. |
