McCarthly Wins Road Race, Herlihy Second

The Cork Business Houses Athletic Association had another bumper entry for their four mile road race, held over the Monahan Road Centre Park Road circuit.  A big group stayed together for the first mile, covered in 5min. 5sec, with Leevale’s Danny Herlihy setting the pace.  Just after the mile mark the leading group separated into two, with Tommy Moloney from Tipperary and Martin McCarthy of Leevale running on the shoulder of Herlihy as they moved away from a group led by Cathal O’Connell and Mark Cotter.  The pattern remained the same until the two mile mark, reached in a time of 10:06.  Then McCarthy gave a quick glance over his shoulder and immediately moved up a gear.  In a few strides the race was over as a contest.  McCarthy covered the third mile in 4:43, and followed with 4:38 for the last mile, giving him a winning time of 19:28, almost a minute ahead of Herlihy who clocked 20:13, and Moloney with 20:29.  Cathal O’Connell was fourth, followed by Billy O’Rourke, Eamon McEvoy, Ian O’Sullivan, Matt Magner, Paul Dinan and Paul O’Mahony.  The womens race saw Mary Sheehan of Fermoy clock a time of 22:36 for the course, half a minute ahead of Carmel Parnell of Leevale, with Mary Sweeney third.
