McCarthy Shines as Carroll Falters at Cork City Sports

The 49th Cork City Sports, generously sponsored by Tesco in association with The Irish Sports Council, provided an excellent afternoon’s entertainment at the Mardyke today.  The sprints were aided by a very strong wind, at it’s best for the mens 100m.  Here Gary Ryan of Nenagh thrilled the crowd with a in a world class 10.18, with Leevale’s Donal McCarthy (right) again displaying the vast improvement he has achieved this year with a fourth place finish in 10.39.  The womens 5,000m turned into farce as the officials at the finish once again displayed incompetence by mis-counting the laps.  This is the second time in two years that this has happened.  The expected win by Mark Carroll of Leevale in the mens 5,000m did not materialise as he struggled from early in the race.  Afterwards he expressed concern at his poor form, and figured that he could be anaemic.  All the Irish runners in this race ran well below what they are capable of.
