Top performance of the weekend on the domestic front was undoubtedly Martin McCarthy’s victory in the Sportsworld five mile classic in Dublin. The Leevale man, following up on his blistering leg in the national road relays a week earlier, had ten seconds to spare over fellow international Cormac Finnerty (Mullingar). The race is the best five miler in the country and one of the best in these islands thanks to former boxing star, Mick Dowling, who spares no effort in putting a top line-up together each year. McCarthy’s victory in 23 minutes 11 seconds puts him right up in the top flight. He was followed across the line by Finnerty (23:21), Noel Berkeley (23:25) and Peter Matthews (23:27). |
