The first race in the Nike Ballycotton summer series of five mile road races, held in Ballyandreen tonight, attracted over 200 runners. There was a big surprise in the mens race when James McGee of Leevale came home a worthy winner in a time of 25:51. A graduate of the University of North Texas, he is now based full time in Cork. Martin Drake of Youghal was the one to follow him home, seven seconds adrift, with junior William Harty third in 26:07. Billy O’Rourke of Leevale took time off from Tesco Cork City Sports duties, where he is secretary, to place fourth in 26:09, ahead of Peter Duggan, Eric Meade and Matt Magner. Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy was a very easy winner in the womens section with a time of 29.10, with Eleanor Threadgold from Bray second in 29:52, followed by Mary Sweeney of St. Finbarrs Colette O’Riordan, Noreen Linehan and Catriona McGreggor.
