The second leg of the Nike Ballycotton summer series of five mile road races was held in Shanagarry tonight. Garrett Barry of North Cork, after winning the first race in the series, started a hot favourite to add to his collection. But, there was a shock in store for the Iona college graduate as he was completely outrun by someone just half his age. Taking control of the race seventeen year old William Harty from Waterford added a significant scalp to his growing list, winning in a time of 25:17, some twenty four seconds ahead of Barry. Third was Cathal O’Connell of St. Finbarrs with a time of 25:53. They were followed home by Peter Duggan of St. Joseph’s (25:57), Eric Meade of East Cork (26:02), Jimmy McHugh, Clonmel (26:04), James McGee, Leevale (26:37), James Murphy, Grange Fermoy (27:06), Ian O’Sullivan, East Cork (27:18), and Paul O’Mahony, Leevale (27:19). Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy had little difficulty winning the womens section in a time of 29:52, well clear of Angela McEvoy of St. Finbarrs in 31:02. Next came Mary Sweeney, St. Finbarrs (31:26), Catriona McGreggor, Midleton (33:50), and Joan Hough, St. Finbarrs (34:56).
