Leevale’s Mark Carroll was 12th in tonight’s big Weltklasse meet in Zurich, Switzerland. The star-studded race was won by Haile Gebrselassie in 12:57.95, followed by Paul Tergat in 12:58.21, and Sammy Kipketer in 12:58.63. Mark was the first non-African born athlete across the line, in a time of 13:12.16, well outside his best. (Results). Last week in Stockholm Mark was eight in the 5,000m with a time of 13:09.64, much slower than he had predicted. Training at the Mardyke track on Thursday he explained that the pacemakers were due to bring them through 3k in 7:40, at which stage he planned to be some thirty metres or so behind. Unfortunately the pacemakers were a bit off with 7:50. This was a bit of a mess for Mark, explaining that he concentrated on where he should be rather than the time. |
