Mark Carroll set a new personal best for the mile at the Bislett Game in Oslo tonight. Running the famous Dream Mile, Mark finished 7th in a time of 3:50.62, pipping Marcus O’Sullivan’s Leevale record in the process. The race was won by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in a time of 3:46.24, followed by William Chirchir of Kenya in 3:47.94, John Kibowen of Kenya in 3:49.87, and Kevin Sullivan of Canada in 3:50.26. Running patiently near the back of the pack for most of the race, the world record attempt by El Guerrouj ensured a fast time for Mark, more than 2 seconds inside his previous best. (Results). Mark was someway below his best on his seasonal European debut at Barcelona last Tuesday when he finished more than three seconds outside Ray Flynn’s national 1,500 metres record, finishing in 3 mins 36.91 secs. Afterwards, he attributed his disappointing run to fatigue, but he looked a lot sharper tonight. |
