On the first day of the European Indoors in Ghent, Mark Carroll qualified for the final of the 3000m in comfort with second place in his heat. The heat was won by Mohammed Mourhit of Belgium in 7:54.09, with Mark second in 7:54.86. The favourite, Rui Silva of Portugal, also qualified in the other heat. The final takes place on Sunday evening. Elsewhere, there was much success for the Irish as Karen Shinkins qualified for the women’s 400m semi-final, James Nolan qualified for the final of the men’s 1500m, and Sinead Delahunty qualified for the final of the women’s 1500m. Ciara Sheehy qualified for the 200m semi-finals with a personal best performance, but failed to qualify for the final.
