One of the most pleasant functions of Cork county board is the annual presentation to the Cork athletes who represented Ireland in the previous twelve months. This year a very pleasant function was held in The New Grand Parade hotel which was attended by most of the athletes, the officers of the county board, as well as some friends and relations. The list of athletes is indeed a very talented one, headed by Mark Carroll of Leevale who showed his undoubted talent by winning the European 3,000m title recently: Frank Cashman of East Cork for his efforts in veteran cross country; Louise Cavanagh for senior cross country; Richie Crowley of St. Finbarrs for veteran cross country; Caroline Daly of East Cork for junior cross country; Breda Dennehy Willis of Bandon for senior cross country; Robert Heffernan of Togher for senior race walking; Bryan Keane of Leevale for junior cross country; Donal McCarthy of Leevale for senior sprinting; Martin McCarthy of Leevale for senior track and cross country; Eamon McEvoy of St. Finbarrs for veteran cross country; Margaret Meade of UCC for senior cross country; Tommy Murphy of Skibbereen for veteran cross country; Mairead O’Callaghan of North Cork for junior cross country; Flor O’Leary of St. Finbarrs for veteran cross country; and Derval O’Rourke of Leevale for junior sprints and hurdles. With an exciting season of track and field ahead it looks very likely that Cork will again have a big representation on Irish teams.
