Grufferty and Dunlea Win Cork Juvenile Cross Country Championships

The Cork juvenile and novice cross country championships were held in Carraig na bhFear today.  Fergus Meade of Glenbower made the early pace in the boys under 18 race, followed by a group of four happy to follow.  Ian Donovan of Leevale was first to fall off the strong pace, with Brian McMahon next to feel the heat.  Going uphill at the start of the last of four laps James Grufferty of Leevale made his move and quickly got away from Meade and Alan Foolkes of Leevale, going on to finish in that order.  Ciara O’Shea from North Cork was in a class of her own in her under 18 race, winning as she pleased from Marjorie Lynch of West Muskerry and Eimear Geary of Leevale.  Mark Hanrahan of Leevale was the early leader in the boys under 16 race, but, like all the early leaders in the Olympics, he was overtaken before the end of the first lap.  The Bandon pair of Mark Lehane and Kieran Ryan, along with Sean Casey of Leevale, better known as a sprinter, then took over, with Lehane proving best from Ryan, with Hanrahan recovering to take bronze.  Niamh Walsh of Glenbower got the better of clubmate Angela Walsh and Ciara Long from West Muskerry in a very closely fought under 16 girls race.  In the under 14 boys race, D. Dunlea of Leevale finished first, leading Leevale to team victory.  (Results)
