The Munster juvenile cross country championships were held for the first time in Listowel race course today. The boys under 18 race featured the hotly fancied William Harty of Waterford, who has been blazing a trail for himself in races of all grades. From the start he opened a big gap on the rest of the field, with only Patrick Guidera of Clonmel giving any real chase. After 2k of the 6k race the two were together, with Guidera edging ahead after another lap, and maintaining that lead, slight as it might be, to the finish. Another Waterford runner, Robert Wade was third, ahead of the first Corkman, James Grufferty of Leevale, who ran a little too conservatively at the start. Leevale were inter club winners and Cork the inter county winners. Arthur Fitzgerald from Farranfore was a most impressive winner of the under sixteen race, blowing the opposition out of it with some very strong front running. Tadgh O’Callaghan of Togher ran a great race to take the silver medal, with Mark Lehane and Kieran Ryan of Bandon, together with Sean Casey of Leevale filling places four to six after a great tussle. Bandon were good team winners. Niamh Walsh of Glenbower finally took the lead in the girls under 14 race with just 100m to go to earn a well judged victory. Glenbower took club team honours from Ballincollig, and Cork won the inter county. (Results)
