Grufferty Wins Turkey Trot

Cork BHAA 5k road race over the Marina circuit, the annual Turkey Trot,  was held in wet, cool conditions today.  Even so, there was an entry of over 150 for the final race before Christmas.  Matt Magner made a return to the racing scene after a short break, and he was one of a group that also included James Grufferty, Bryan Keane, Fergal Tubridy, and American Greg Ellis.  By halfway Grufferty had made his way into the lead, closely shadowed by Keane and Magner.  With less than a mile remaining Magner had found the pace too hot, leaving Grufferty and Keane to battle it out.  With about 500m to go Keane edged in front, and began to pull away.  However, with about sixty metres to go he suddenly stopped, taking no further part in the race, and allowing Grufferty to pass for an easy win ahead of Magner.  Mary Sweeney won the womens section, ahead of Karen O’Hanlon and Angela McEvoy.  However, to add a little spice to the event, participants were asked to predict their own finishing times, and, without the benefit of watches, the prizes were destined to those who finished in the closest time to their prediction.  Mary Sweeney was closest, just 0.54 seconds out, followed by Liam Horgan (0.82), Ger Kiely (1.26), Jerry Forde (2.09), John Walsh (2.32), and John Holland (2.33).
