The American collegiate indoor track and field season ended with the national championships which were held at a brand new indoor stadium at the University of Arkansas this weekend. Irish competitors were quite thin on the ground, with just two representatives in action. Leevale’s David Brosnan (right), of Iona college, qualified for the championships with an impressive second place finish at a meet in Notre Dame. His time of 1:48.90 was just a fraction outside his PB. At nationals he finished fifth in his heat with a time of 1:49.36, missing qualification for the final by just one place and 0.06 seconds. Keith Kelly of Providence College was the other Irish runner. However he finished last in the 5,000m final with a time of 14:45.24. A week earlier he broke fourteen minutes for the first time when he clocked 13:57.78 for the distance. In that race Vinny Mulvey of Iona College clocked14:14.52; Dermot Galvin of Providence 14:30.77; and Leevale’s Barry Egan of Iona 14:58.91. (Photo by Timothy O’Dowd) |
