A record 275 athletes turned out in cold conditions for the annual Belgooly 4 Mile Road Race today. Fiachra Lombard of Leevale was among the 275, and was an easy winner in a time of 19:32. In the leading pack from the start, Fiachra broke away just before the two mile mark and never looked like being caught. John Burke of Mullingar was second in 19:54, followed by Des English of DCD in 20:05, Eric Meade, East Cork (20:29), Bryan Keane, Leevale (20:35), Dennis Murphy, East Cork (20:38), and James Grufferty, Leevale (20:41). Leevale’s newest member, Conor Tierney finished in a creditable 24:59 in his first ever race, edging out clubmate Damian Collins by about 2 seconds. In the women’s race, Canadian International Sarah Dupre came from behind to beat Valerie Vaughan of Blarney-Inniscarra in a time of 21:49. Dupre, already selected for the Canadian Cross-Country team for the World Cross Country Championships in Leopardstown next year, is spending Christmas in Cork with her boyfriend David Healy. Vaughan was second in 22:22, with Carmel Crowley of Bandon third in 22:19. Michelle Murphy-Scott, home for the holidays, was fourth in 23:31. (Results) |
