Donal McCarthy is the latest Leevale athlete to be given a ticket for Sydney, traveling as a member of the 4x100m relay squad. Just reward indeed for a very dedicated athlete who also fits in a full time job with his training, and compensation for being overlooked for the European indoor championships in spite of setting a new National record over 60m. His selection is also a big boost for Leevale’s sprints coach John Sheehan who is now ranked amongst the leading coaches in the country. With Mark Carroll already qualified for the Olympics, Leevale could have a third Olympian if Darren Dinneen makes the standard. Just half a second outside the required time, he runs the 800m on Sunday, with Donal McCarthy concentrating on the 100m.
