The new track at Castleisland was officially opened on Sunday by the local An Riocht club. Weather conditions were on the cool side, with very strong winds the order of the day. Valerie Vaughan of Blarney Inniscarra raced into the lead in the 1,500m from the gun and was never challenged, while Louise Cavanagh of UCC was overtaken by Ann Marie Larkin in the closing stages and had to settle for third ahead of Roisin Quinn of Waterford. Freda Davoren of UCC continues in sparkling form and had an excellent second place finish in the 1,000m, while Donal McCarthy of Leevale (pictured right) was third in a very closely fought 100m in a time of 10.46. Thomas Coman from Templemore came very late in the 400m to overtake the Australian Brad Jamieson on the line. Peter Matthews did not hang around in the 3,000m. Taking the lead from the gun he only had Seamus Power for company after 600m. Power took over the lead after three laps and was never challenged after that, winning in a time of 8:05.9.
