The annual Corkbeg five mile road race near Whitegate, organised by East Cork athletic club and Ballycotton Running Promotions, saw a fine return to form by Billy O’Rourke of Leevale. A couple of weeks ago he suffered from the early fast pace, finishing fifth. However, the more sedate pace in the Corkbeg race saw him turn the tables on clubmate Trevor Foolkes, winning in a time of 25:50, eleven seconds ahead of Foolkes. Eric Meade of East Cork was third (26:22), ahead of Toddy Finn, Kanturk (27:11), Paul O’Mahony, Leevale (27:23), Denis McCarthy, East Cork (28:35), Frank Cashman, East Cork (28:40), and Eddie Mullane, Cork BHAA (28:56). Olga Cronin of East Cork, back from scholarship in Western Kentucky University, had an easy win in the womens section in a time of 29:56, with Mary Sweeney of St. Finbarrs second (31:28), Mary Finn, Millstreet (33:25) third, Catriona McGreggor, Midleton fourth (33:32), and Claire O’Brien, East Cork fifth (35:34). |
