Parnell Second in Army/Cork Corporation 5k

Glorious sunshine greeted the runners this morning at the joint Army / Cork Corporation 5k road race over the Marina circuit.  The race distance was reduced from four miles to 5k due to roadworks on Monahan road, but made no difference to the big entry.  Cathal O’Connell of St. Finbarrs won the men’s race in a time of 15:20, with John Kearney second in 15:47.  Timmy Murphy was third (16:02), with James Murphy fourth (16:18).  Next came Paul O’Mahony (16:17), Fergal Tubridy (16:25), Kieran Ryan (16:50), Ian O’Sullivan (17:01), and Michael Dunne (17:03).  Mary Sheehan added another victory to her long list of achievements with a time of 17:39, with Carmel Parnell second in 17:54, Mary Sweeney third in 18:44, Joan Hough fourth (19:09), Mary Murphy fifth (19:16), and Mary Finn sixth (19:32).  Vet wins went to Willie Hayes over 40, Tom Cody over 45, Michael Dunne over 50, Myles McHugh over 55, John O’Leary over 60, Mary Murphy over 35, Joan Hough over 40, and Frankie Devlin over 45.  Gerry Forde was the wheelchair winner.
