A Glorious Day for Juvenile Track and Field at the CIT

The first stage of the Cork juvenile track and field championships were held in glorious sunshine at the CIT track on Sunday.  There was a tremendous turn out for most of the events, especially the younger ages.  Performances were of a very high level, making it very difficult to single out any one performance.  However, the closest finish of the day came in the boys Under-17 1,500m race.  Here Sean Casey of Leevale threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the field by surging clear in the final stages.  Chief rival Mark Lehane from Bandon gave chase in the closing 100m (see photo on right), and closed fast, making up a lot of ground.  The finish judges couldn’t split the pair, declaring a dead heat, probably the fairest result, as well as the closest result of the day.  Congratulations to all the Leevale athletes who competed in the county championships on Sunday.  It was great to see so many members doing so well during the course of a very long programme of events.  And a special well done to all the athletes who were having their first taste of competition.  Some won medals; some didn’t.  One thing for sure is that if you stick at it success is sure to come, sooner or later.  Photo on left shows Leevale girls relay team.
