Leevale’s Mark Carroll will hardly be pleased with his eight place finish in the big Prefontaine Oregon meet today where he clocked 13:32.28. The season has a long way to run though. Sinead Delahunty was also outside the world championships qualifying mark with her 6th place finish in the 1,500m (4:11.04). Big news at the meet was the performance of American Alan Webb who placed fifth in the mile with a time of 3:53.43. Webb is still a high school athlete and his time betters the high school mark set by Jim Ryun back in 1964 of 3:55.3.Breeda Dennehy Willis of Bandon was back on the track again on Saturday, running the 5,000m at the Boston High Performance meet. In a tremendous finish she was just pipped on the line by American Amy Rudolph who posted a winning time of 15:34.07, giving her a wining margin of just 0.3, some way off the Worlds qualifying mark of 15:22. Marie McMahon Davenport was seventh in 16:26.14. Enda Johnson was seventh in the 1,500m (3:49.50), while Larry Morrissey was 4th in the B race (3:51.25) and Dermot Galvin 7th (3:57.33). Kathryn Casserly was 6th in the 1,500m (4:33.06). The final event of the American collegiate track season, the national championships, gets underway today, with Keith Kelly of Providence the main Irish hope for a medal.
