The cross country season got off to a flying start with the Carraig na bhFear open meet today. Good fields in each of the races, and good competition were the order of the day. The novice B races produced two good performances. The mens race saw Derek O’Leary of Leevale take the lead after the first of three laps, and he then cruised to victory, with John Lehane of Eagle running on strongly on the last lap to take second. Peter Lynch of West Cork was third ahead of early leader Dave O’Dwyer of Leevale, with Sean McGrath of Carraig na bhFear fifth. West Cork won a close team contest with 48 points, ahead of Eagle on 52, and Ballincollig on 56. Elizabeth Crowley of West Cork looked the likely winner of the womens race as she opened up a big lead. However, she was collared in the last half mile by Aoife Falvey of Midleton who proved a worthy winner, with Michelle Moloney of West Cork third, Geraldine Curtin of Youghal fourth and Dawn Kelly of West Cork fifth. Midleton were team winners on 17 points ahead of Youghal on 18. Fergus Meade of East Cork and Brian McMahon battled closely in the early stages of the junior race before McMahon broke away to win easily ahead of James McCarthy of Glenbower who ran on strongly to take second.
