There was a double delight for the Lombard brothers, Cathal and Fiachra, when they were both selected for the Irish World Cross-Country Championships in Ostend in 11 days time. Cathal was selected for the Long-Course squad, in addition to the four athletes who finished in front of him at the National Championships, and the American NCAA cross country champion Keith Kelly, who just last weekend finished an impressive third in the NCAA indoor 5,000 metre championships. Fiachra was one of only two athletes selected for the Short-Course. If the World Championships had gone ahead at Leopardstown, the AAI would have fielded a full team, but in an effort to control costs, only two athletes will participate in the 4km race, the other athlete being Gareth Turnbull. There is a full team in the Women’s Short-Course, while Maureen Harrington is the only athlete participating in the Women’s Long-Course event. (Maureen later withdrew in protest at not being selected for the short course) The first five finishers in both the men’s and women’s junior races at the national championships have also been selected.
