Roy Fahy of Leevale got back on the winning trail tonight with a clear win (25:23) in the Joe Hourigan Memorial 5 mile road race in Midleton. Eric Meade of East Cork was second (26:11), followed by three more Leevale runners, Matt Magner (26:24), Billy O’Rourke (26:45), and Paul O’Mahony (27:54) who was ahead of the East Cork pair of Denis McCarthy (28:28) and Frank Cashman (28:34). Daniel Byrne from Mallow was 8th (28:42). International runner Maureen Harrington made the journey from Kerry to win the womens section (28:56), from Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy (29:27), and Carmel Crowley of Bandon (30:09). Noel Berkeley of DSD, who is now resident in east Cork, should be a regular competitor on the Cork circuit from now on. He had almost two minutes to spare (30:55) over Seamus O’Donnell of GCH (32:40) in the SIPTU Mayday 10k organised by Mallow athletic club on Monday. Dermot Callaghan from Donoughmore was third (33:05), ahead of George Murray of North Cork (33:24). Mary Sheehan won the womens race (37:10), from Josephine Killeen of Donore (37:42) and Niamh O’Sullivan of Riocht (39:05).
