The second leg of the Nike Ballycotton summer series of 5 mile road races was held in Shanagarry tonight. As expected, 17 year old William Harty from West Waterford again lined up at the start, just five days after a disastrous run in the Nike Ballycotton 10. This time he was well in control of the race from the gun and was never really challenged as he raced to an easy win in 25:20, well clear of Eric Meade of East Cork (26:11); Peter Duggan of St. Joseph’s (26:18); Philip Harty West Waterford (26:32); Cillian O’Tuama of Leevale (26:50), and Martin Drake of East Cork (27:12). Sonia O’Sullivan of Ballymore Cobh was next across the line (27:33), comfortably winning the women’s race. Carmel Crowley of Bandon was second (28:04); followed by Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy (29:34); Colette O’Riordan of West Muskerry (31:19), and Mary Sweeney of St. Finbarrs (31:31).
