McCarthy Continues Comeback with Second Place in Ballycotton 10

After delays caused by the Foot-and-Mouth scare, the Nike Ballycotton 10 finally took place today in very warm temperatures in Ballycotton.  At the halfway mark Leevale’s Martin McCarthy was a good 500m behind 17 year old William Harty who covered the 5 miles in 24:34.  At that stage only Noel Berkeley was with the teenager.  The very hot conditions took it’s toll on Harty though as he then began to fade, leaving Berkeley to cruise on his own to his 5th victory in the event in a time of 49:54.  As Harty drifted back the field, McCarthy became engaged in a three way battle for second, but sprinted clear to comfortably take 2nd spot (52:04).  Sonia O’Sullivan finished the race some 11 seconds outside the course record set by Marion sutton back in 1997.  Weather conditions were again a factor, as well as the fact that she is some three months pregnant.  Roy Fahy in 6th and Cillian O’Tuama in 17th, together with Martin McCarthy gave Leevale second place in the team competition.
