Parnell 2nd in Castlemartyr

The East Cork summer season of road races got under way tonight when the East Cork athletic club staged their annual four mile race in Castlemartyr.  George Murray from North Cork, winner of the BHAA 5k on the Marina a few weeks ago, looked well in control throughout this race, pulling away in the last mile to win comfortably in 19:46..  There was a terrific battle for the minor placings with Eric Meade from the host club just getting the better of Leevale’s Roy Fahy in 20:13, followed by Fahy in 20:14.  Donncha O’Mahony was fourth with 20:42, followed by Fergus Meade, Kenneth Kelleher, Matt Magner, and Paul O’Mahony.  The womens race also produced a great finish as Carmel Crowley from Bandon just got the better of Carmel Parnell of Leevale, winning in 23:30, followed by Parnell in 23:32.  Blaithin Hannon from St. Finbarrs was third (24:19).
