The annual Army/Cork Corporation 5k road race attracted another big entry at the Marina on Sunday morning in reasonably good weather conditions. With the Harty family in the field there were no points for guessing who would lead the race, and sure enough both William and Phillip were well clear of the field by the one mile mark. However, there is definitely no love lost between the pair as they maintain a fiercely competitive approach to races. After edging a few metres ahead William raced the hard way, with older brother Phillip breathing down his shoulder all the way. It was only in the final half mile that William got some real daylight between himself and his brother, going on to win in a time of 15:32, six seconds ahead of Phillip. Cathal O’Connell started slowly, catching up with the second group at about the half way mark. He immediately upped the pace a little and only Timmy Murphy stayed with him. The pair had a battle royal for the remainder of the race with Murphy taking third (15:54) ahead of O’Connell (16:00). O’Connell is just back after a twelve month sabbatical in Canada, while Murphy is back from Australia – going there for the Olympics and staying on there for a good break! In the womens section there is simply no stopping Carmel Crowley who goes from strength to strength on the road. Her winning time (16:56) saw her almost a minute ahead of Mary Sheehan (17:47), with Leevale’s Carmel Parnell third (18:05).
