 The Christmas racing season kicked off today with the Belgooly 4m Road Race, which was held in fine weather conditions. The race was won by international walker Robert Heffernan of Togher in 19:30. Heffernan was followed home by Lee Willis in 19:42, Josh Palmer in 20:06, and Cathal O’Connell of St. Finbarrs in 20:10. Alan O’Shea of Bantry was fifth in 20:40, Billy O’Rourke of Leevale was 6th in 20:42, with clubmates Ronan Guirey (20:46) and James Grufferty next in 20:54. The women’s race was won by Breda Dennehy-Willis in an impressive 21:04, followed home by Valerie Vaughen in 22:00. Carmel Crowley of Bandon was second in 22:09, with Michelle Scott of Carrignavar, home for the holidays, fourth in 23:06. Claire Gibbons of Leevale (shown crossing the line in photo) was fifth in 23:31. ( Results).
