The first day of the county juvenile track and field championships produced yet another feast of excellent performances by Leevale athletes. The Fitzgerald sisters, Kathleen and Maura were again in winning form in their respective shot putt events, while on the track the sprinters dominated proceedings. All the relay teams put in great efforts, even if some of the baton changing went a little astray!
On Friday night the first leg half of the county senior and junior track and field championships take place at CIT, starting at 6.30pm. Events are 100m, 400m, 1,500m, hammer, shot, sprint hurdles, sprint relay, junior men and senior women long jump, senior men and junior women high jump.

The second half of the championships take place on Tuesday next.
On Saturday the Evening Echo schools track and field championships take place at CIT starting at 1pm. First three in all events qualify for Munster championships.
What a pity the sport’s administrators cannot do something about the scheduling of championships. This weekend the county junior championships take place the night before the schools championships. The Munster junior championships take place the day after the Munster schools championships, while the Munster juvenile championships take place the same day as the Tailteann Games. What pure madness!!
A new track and field committee was elected at the recent Congress. It’s time they earned their keep and ensured that fixtures do not clash.
