Damien Dunlea, who had a disappointing run at the Celtic International two weeks ago – due mainly to an abdominal strain – got back to winning ways yesterday with a sparkling display of front running at the Kit Kat Munster schools cross country championships held in St. Augustine’s College, Dungarvan.
Dunlea, who usually comes from behind, tore into the lead from the start and quickly built up a lead that simply grew with every stride. The underfoot sticky conditions made no difference to the Colaiste Chriost Ri youngster who just glided over the surface. In his wake he had Jason Fahy from Shannon, who was ahead of him in the Celtic, a long way behind in second.
Cork runners made a big impression on the fixture as Fergus Meade from Midleton CBS led all the way to win the senior boys race from Peter Dalton from the Mon; Niamh Walsh of St. Mary’s Midleton did likewise in the senior girls race, as did Joyce Curtin from Colaiste Eoin in Youghal in the intermediate girls.
