Fiachra Lombard, now working in Birmingham, got his cross country season off to a flying start at the Reebok Cross Challenge in Liverpool on Saturday. Strong front running by Matt Smith of Tipton Harriers saw Fiachra and Spencer Barden break clear of the field with 2k to go. The final sprint resulted in a win for Smith, just one second ahead of Fiachra in a time exactly one minute faster than last year’s equivalent.
Fiachra hasn’t raced since the Inter Varsities at CIT back in April. However, on this form he must be a strong fancy for the National Inter Counties to be held in Donoughmore on 24th November. Add in Cathal Lombard and Martin McCarthy and there should be a good Leevale presence in the leading group challenging for places on the Irish team for the European championships.
