John Hegarty Honoured

One of Cork’s longest serving officials, John Hegarty from Carraig na bhFear Athletic Club, was honoured at a reception in Carraig na bhFear on Friday night last.

For over thirty years John has served as Vice Chairman of Cork County Board.  In that time he has given of his time at practically every cross country and track meet in Cork.  Former Cork Board chairman Paddy Hickey recalled the time the National cross country championships were held in Whitechurch.  For two days beforehand it rained, but that didn’t stop John.  Rain or no rain he worked for the two days sledging stakes into the ground.
John was always a tireless worker where athletics was involved, a fact echoed by several speakers at the function.. Presentations were made by John Smyth and Pat Walsh on behalf of Cork County Board, Dan McCarthy on behalf of the east Cork Board and Christy Murphy, Chairman of Carraig na bhFear on behalf of their club.
From everyone in Leevale we say a big Thank You to John for all the work he has done for athletics.  We wish you many years of happy retirement.
