The Leevale underage squad were once again in tremendous form at the weekend, and had another highly successful time at the Munster indoor championships in Nenagh.
In the under 19 events Aisling Maunsell was in great form winning 60m, 200m and 400m titles. Niamh Cremin followed her home in the 400m with bronze, while Sinead Mackey did likewise in the 60m. Deirdre Murphy continued her winning
ways with gold in the shot and Sharon O’Mahony took silver in the long jump.
The under 18’s saw Orla McSweeney take silver in the 60m, while Donna Hosford won the under 17 long jump and was second in the 60m hurdles. Aileen Pomphrett won double silver in the 200m and long jump.
Kathleen Fitzgerald won the under 16 shot, and Orla Coghlan brought back double gold in the 60m and 200m. Amy Clarke was second in the long jump and third in the 200m.
At under 14 level Maura Fitzgerald was second in the shot.
And then came the relays! Gold medal performances for the under 19, 18, 17, and 16 teams! Silver medals for the under 17 (b team), and 14 teams, and bronze medals for the under 15’s! Fabulous running.
The boys squad saw Greg O’Leary win both the 60m hurdles and 200m under 16; Thomas Maunsell was second in the under 19 1,500m; Alan Sexton was second in the under 18 200m and third in the 400m, and Thomas O’Sullivan was 3rd in the under 14 long jump.
Quite a weekend on the competitive front. There are also some stories about previously very quiet athletes who raised a few eyebrows on Saturday night with their performances on the dance floor!! (Nuff said about that).
Congratulations to everyone who competed in Nenagh and also to those who came very close to winning medals. With top coach John Sheehan in charge it’s only a matter of time before you also strike gold.
