The first day of the Evening Echo South Munster schools track and field championships were held on Saturday at the CIT track, with the Cork underage championships on Sunday. The 800m runners on Sunday had to endure a downpour of rain in this our monsoon season.
Ciaran O’Lionaird completed a good double of 800m wins in the schools and counties, with John Shine a close second in the schools event. Greg O’Leary was in good form winning the 100m hurdles on Saturday and adding the 200m and 100m hurdles in the county’s.
Jessika Zebo was again impressive in winning the 100m hurdles in the schools, while Donna Hosford had a close call in winning the long jump, relying on countback for the title.
Thomas Maunsell was a clear winner of the schools 3,000m.
There were several excellent performances in the sprints on
Sunday, with Aileen Pomphrett winning the under 18 200m ahead of Donna Hosford; Orla Coughlan won the under 17 200m from Amy Clarke; Lorna Buckley won the under 16 200m from Claire O’Mahony and Claire Looney won the under 15 title. Carl McNamara rounded off the day with a win in the under 17 200m.
