Stars in the Making

(Report by Donal)

Leevale athletes excelled at the 2006 Munster indoor championships. This was the largest and best prepared contingent of juvenile athletes to travel from Leevale for some time and as a result they won a total of 46 medals and set three Munster Championship records.  Leevale athletes competed and won medals in all of the track & field disciplines, this is testament to the current coaching structure in place in the club.
We had a total of nine athletes compete in the high jump over the two weekends. This was the first high jump competition for most of these athletes so it was all the more impressive when Daire Wash and Conor McDonald took silver in boys U12 and boys U13 respectively. Leevale had a total of twelve athletes entered in the boys U13 Shot, this was almost 50% of the total entries for this event. It was little wonder that we secured Gold, Silver and Bronze, but what really impressed was all three medal winning athletes smashed the old championship record. The previous record was 8.52m, Eric Stam putted 9.45m to secure third place, Zack Gibbons putted 9.86 to secure second while Daire Walsh putted an amazing 10.20m to secure first place, his winning put smashing the previous record by 1.69m.
Other notable performances over the weekend were, Chris Murnane’s hat trick of individual wins in the Boys U16  60m, 60m Hurdle and 200m events, Thomas O’Sullivan’s win in the Boys U18 200m.  Cliona O Shea’s three individual medals in the girls U17 was an excellent achievement on her first Munster Championship. Harriet Cross who is in the  process of transferring to Leevale won five individual medals over the weekend. Maura Fitzgerald and Pawel Hazler both won their respective shot put events and Jennifer Murphy won the U13 girls long jump.
To complete an extremely successful weekend, we had a total of nine relay teams qualify for the All Ireland Indoor Championships. Two of these teams set Munster Championship records in doing so, the boys U13 and Girls U14.  Photos

Best of luck to Derval O’Rourke and Ailis McSweeney who compete for Ireland at the World indoor championships in Moscow next weekend.  Derval put in another storming performance in Lievain France last Friday night, winning the 60m hurdles in 7.90, a time that equaled her national record.
there were just three Leevale runners at the national senior and junior cross country championships at Santry.  Mark Hanrahan came from well off the pace to finish a creditable ninth in the senior race, while Ciaran O’Lionaird came off his indoor season to run the junior race, finishing a good fifth before closing his season for a break.  Graham O’Dwyer continued his comeback with a good run in the senior race, having earlier run well in the national intermediate.  Nationals Photos
Ireland’s shortest road races, the 60m dash for men and women, will again take place at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cork.  The launch of the races will take place in the Market Tavern, sponsors of the races, on Friday at 6pm.  Anyone interested in competing should contact John Sheehan.
