Over the last two weekends Leevale athletes competed in the AAI Juvenile indoor championships in Nenagh. Based on the results of the Munster Championships hopes for strong performances were high and we were not disappointed. All of the competing athletes performed extremely well with most setting PB’s in their respective events. As a result of this Leevale athletes won a total of twenty three All Ireland Medals.
Topping the medal table was Chris Murnane with a total of five medals, three individual and two relay. Chris won the 60m Hurdle and the 200m sprint, while finishing a very strong second in the 60m sprint. Cliona O’Shea performed extremely well in her first All Ireland championship to secure three individual bronze medals and one relay medal on the girls U18 team. Rebecca Corbett ran well to beat a strong field in the girls U14 60m. David Quilligan jumped a 6.05m to win the U17 boys long jump. This year we walked away with four medals in the shot, Pawel Hazler won the boys U18 shot, Maura Fitzgerald again threw well in the girls U18 shot while Daire
Walsh and Zack Gibbons finished second and third respectively in the boys U13 shot. Conor McDonald won silver in the boys U12 high jump, this is our first all Ireland medal in this event for some time. Jessie O Flynn finished a strong second in Girls U13 girls, while Caroline Murnane also finished second in the U13 girls 60m Hurdle.
A total of seven of our relay teams won medals with boys U13 setting a new championship record. The indoor season is over for another year and we now look forward with eager anticipation to the Leevale Open Sports on April 16th and the County Championships which take place in May.
