This weekend saw the South Munster Schools championships at CIT on Saturday, the Cork Underage championships at CIT on Sunday, and the Munster Junior and Under 23 championships at CIT on Monday. With some athletes eligible to compete on each day it surely defeats the purpose of having the championships in the first place. Cork badly needs representation at the meeting before Christmas every year when dates for fixtures are decided, to speak on behalf of the athletes. With the current crazy fixture list it’s the athletes who are losing out big time.
Highlights of the meet saw Carl McNamara win the 100m and 200m at under 23 level, with Derek Duff second in both. David Quilligan cleared 6.69m to win the junior long jump, and Katey Byrd had an under 23 double in the 100m and 100m hurdles.
