AAI Juvenile T&F Championships, Antrim

Leevale juvenile athletes travelled to Antrim for the first two days of the All Ireland U13-U19 Juvenile Championships this weekend. Conditions on the Saturday were once again wet and windy, but this did not appear to dampen the spirits of the athletes.

Patrick Maher was in top form over the weekend, winning both the 100m and 300m hurdles from his clubmate Edmond O’Halloran. Patrick subsequently competed in the 400m and finished third in a very strong time of 52.58 seconds. In the BU18 Chris Murnane led from the start to win the 400m Hurdles. It was great to see Leevale athletes competing and winning medals at national level in the high jump – Robert O’Halloran finished second in the BU14 and Eric Stam finished second in the BU15. Daire Walsh threw a massive PB in the BU15 Javelin competition to take second place with a throw of 37.47m. In the long jump Darren Lee and Caroline Murnane both finished just outside the medals in fourth place.

Paul Scanlon, competing as an overseas athlete, ran in the BU16 800m. Paul led from the start and strung the field out, however he was tracked all the way by Dean Cronin who just managed to pip Paul on the line for first place.

The last day of the Juvenile championships takes place next Sunday in Tullamore. The best of luck to the athletes who will compete there.
