Leevale multi-eventers on top of their winter training
After five months without competitions Leevale multi-eventers finally got an opportunity to test their training progress at their final Christmas school holiday. On a frosty morning eight of them took up the Pentathlon challenge, and after a very long day six of them completed their pentathlon, three of them obtaining medals for their effort: one gold, one silver and one bronze.
In the Boys U14 Robert O’Halloran made a remarkable debut improving significantly on all his previous individual marks and he achieved solid allround performances. His 10.09m in the shot putt came very close to the club record of 10.17m.
In the Girls U15 Jane Linehan was troubled by injury from the start and had to give up during the long jump. Katie Nagle was well in contention after 4 events, but wasn’t able to compete in the final 800m. Another multi-event debutant, Jessie O’Flynn, had an excellent competition and managed a creditable 4th place in an initial field of 15 athletes. She shared victory in the 60m hurdles with 9.7s (this might be a new Club Record), but found the 800m almost one lap too long.
The Boys U15 were dominated by four of our “black and ambers”. Last year Daire Walsh was superior and won all 5 events at ease, but it was different this time. Eric Stam has been steadily catching up with him this winter and did the same during this pentathlon. Daire opened up a considerable gap running a 9.6s PB in the 60m hurdles, but Eric beat him in the next three events and got into a lead of 32 points by jumping 1.61m high, 9cm clear of all other U15 and U16 contenders. Only 57 points (less than 5 seconds in the 800m) were separating the first three places before the start of the 800m. Daire went out fast from the start, and in the end Eric couldn’t close the gap enough to hold onto his lead. Zack Gibbons also had a good pentathlon and showed major progress in his long jump and shot putt (11.05m). Sean Fogarty surprised himself jumping a big new personal best of 1.37m in the high jump and also got a new shot putt PB. While Daire set a new total points score club record, Eric got new long jump and high jump records, and Zack set a new shot putt club record.
All the results can be seen in the attached table. Well done to all and lets hope the progression will continue!
Unfortunately the National Indoors Combined Event Championships will be held only 6 days after the Munster event and is only for even age groups, so Leevale will not feature much in this competition.
