Leevale open sports were held at the Mardyke track on Sunday last. Athletes came from near and far to compete at the annual sports event. This event grows in stature year on year with clubs travelling long distances to give their members the opportunity to participate in athletics outside of the highly competitive championship events.
The juvenile programme commenced at 11:00 am in glorious sunshine. Due to large number of entries it was impossible to run the programme to schedule but the athletes enjoyed themselves and all got the opportunity to compete in a range of events. See results page.
Due to the over run of the juvenile programme the junior & senior programme was delayed by over one hour. This aspect of the will be reviewed by sports committee and addressed in advance of next year’s meet.
Many of the athletes attending were seeking to achieve standards for the various upcoming international events.
Leevale athlete Edmond O’Halloran had dream start to his outdoor season by achieving the qualifying standard for the European Youth Olympics for the 110m hurdles. Edmond finished in a time of 14.28, well inside the 14.80 second standard.
Kelly Proper had a busy day winning the long jump, 100m & 200m events while finishing second in the high jump and third in the shot putt.
We take the opportunity to thank all the clubs who attended our open sports in great numbers and we provide special mention for Emerald AC, Dooneen AC, Ennis Track AC, Menapians AC, West Waterford AC, Ferrbank AC, Clonliffe Harriers, Raheny Shamrock AC, Abbey Striders, Youghal AC, Limerick AC, Listowel AC, Carraig na bhFear AC and Togher AC who all sent large numbers of athletes to compete.
