In what was a huge honour for the club, Leevale had two representatives at the European Cross Country Championships in Albufeira, Portugal today.

In the U23 men’s race, Ciarán Ó Lionáird, who has been in superb form on the US Collegiate circuit recently, found the trip to Europe too much for him, performing well below par in 76th position. As a measure of his distress at the finish line, he required oxygen to recover and missed the medal ceremony where the Irish team were presented with gold after doing superbly well to win the team competition. While Ciarán will be disappointed, he will know there are better days ahead.

In the women’s race, Lizzie Lee had a very strong finish in her first international championships in 35th place. She was the second finisher on an Irish team that finished 6th, a performance that was on a par with her recent excellent form. The team was led home by Fionnuala Britton, who was unlucky to be beaten into 4th position after being in the medals for most of the race.
