Leevale’s distance runners were out in force at the first of the Ballycotton 5 Mile Summer Series races at Ballyandreen tonight. The cool, bright weather made for pleasant running conditions in the east Cork townland.
Top placed Leevale athlete on the night was Lizzie Lee, who once again took the honours in the senior women’s category with a new PB of 28:29, though she was made battle all the way by Claire McCarthy of St. Finbarr’s who finished just three seconds behind her.
In the overall placings, Cillian Ó Tuama was first across the line for Leevale, finishing 9th in 27:14, just ahead of Donal Coffey, who also had a new PB with 27:18. James Grufferty and Mark Bickerdike weren’t too far back in 16th and 18th respectively, and with Lizzie Lee in 20th overall, Leevale had 5 in the top 20. David Comber and Thomas Shortland also had strong races just outside the 30 minute mark in 40th and 41st positions, and it was great to see a total of 21 Leevale athletes compete on the night.
The race was won by James McCarthy of East Cork in 25:16, from Martin McCarthy of St. Finbarr’s.
