Day 1 of the Munster Juvenile Championships were held in Castleisland today. In action were the boys U9-U11 2x competition and the U14-U15 boys and girls. The day started with the sprint hurdles and Marie O’Halloran picked up the first medal of the day by winning the GU14 event. In the BU14 sprint hurdles Eli Kadi finished in second place, ahead of Daniel O’Mahony who finished third.
Next up was the 2x competition and the duo of Tareke Wright and Adam Idah competing in the U10 competition finished in second place in both the sprint and the long jump events.
Ciara Nalty had a welcome return to the high jump competition setting a PB of 1.40m to finish in fourth place. She then went on to compete in the 200m where ran a very strong race to take a clear victory.
Emma O’Brien, having competed in the All-Ireland schools yesterday, finished second in the GU15 200m. Emer Dinan competing in her first Munster Championships was unlucky not to qualify for the final having finished in second place in her heat.
Darren Lee had a third place finish in the BU15 long jump with 5.08m and was just outside the medals in fourth for the 200m.
The day was rounded off with emphatic wins for the BU14 and Girls U15 in their respective relays. All athletes who finished in top four positions have qualified for the All-Ireland
Day 2 of the championships will be held in Castleisland next Sunday, 13th June, for the girls U9-U11 2x competition and remaining events for U14-U15 Boys and Girls.
